Ms. Catherine Namaste, (Greetings)
Thank you very much for your message. It is impossible to gain the experience of Self Realization without guidance from enlightened Guru. The another name of this experience is permanent peace and bliss.
All the ancient scriptures and the books of sages very specifically suggest the seekers to give in to Jnani Guru. (self realized Guru): Geeta (Most authentic scripture) in Chapter 4 Verse 34 recommends as under : "To understand the knowledge of God (self-realization) one MUST give in (surrender completely) and bow with respect ( before Guru); and ask the questions (to clear doubts in the mind). The (Guru who is) knowledgeable and knower of the philosophy of God will (happily) advise the knowledge (to seekers).
It is unfortunate that most of the people in the world who call themselves "saints" and teach meditation to others do not know themselves what self-realization is.
I would request you to read all the pages with full concentration in the
website www.onlineselfrealization.com <http://www.onlineselfrealization.com>
(Please ignore wrong English). Most of your doubts shall be cleared. Please do not hesitate to ask me any question on any topic of self realization or any other topic of ancient knowledge.
Thank you and regards

Since time is an illusion, and every present moment is the center of infinity, how then should we define past lives? Are they really parallel lives?

Ms Ave Maria Namaskar (Greetings)
No doubt that time is an illusion. In the articles written in the website ww.onlineselfrealization.com <http://www.onlineselfrealization.com> it is logically explained.
I do not know whether present moment is center of infinity. I believe that infinity can't have center. Ancient sages say that this world was never in existence. It's like a daytime dream. In dream also our mind creates a new world for us. While in dream we feel the world in the dream to be true. In the same way till the nescience prevails we feel this world to be true. Nothing actually had happened in the past and nothing shall be taking place in future. Every present moment becomes past the very next moment. Even if you pronounce the word "present", it becomes past next moment. So, there is nothing like present too. In fact, present past and future are the parts of time. When we say time is illusory, naturally present past and future are also illusory.
It is like watching the clouds sitting in the gallery. Every moment we find he changes in the position of clouds. Every moment we find changes in the world. Clouds have no past, present and future, anytime picture could be different. The world is similar.
There are no past lives nor the parallel lives. For me you are illusion and or you I am illusiion. In fact both of us and entire world is illusory. It is nly sensed by our sense organs which are very momentary. All of our organs come out of our mind to make us sense of the world and happenings in the world. When we go to sleep our sense organs get merged in to our mind. When our minds want to see the dream it again creates fresh sense organs and we are able to see the dream. How we could have seen ourselves in dream, when our sense organs especially eyes become defunct in sleep? The mind emerges from/empowered by our soul, when it desires to experience.the world. I must thank you for asking this question to me. You are a first person from US to ask me such a question which involves deeper eternal knowledge. Unless you have deep study in Advaita or you have strong desire to understand the eternal knowledge this question can't come to mind.
In fact this is not a question to be answered in few words. However, I
shall definitely write in length sometime in the website on this topic. However, one has to have some basic knowledge from Guru to understand this wisdom. Books give you knowledge of words not the knowledge of God. One has to get his "insight" evoked with the guidance from the knowledgeable person.
Thank you. With regards,
Swami Aniljee
