Gajanan Maharaj from Shegaon (Buldhana District), Maharashtra, India is regarded by Hindus as a saint. A temple in his name is built on his Samadhi at Shegaon. "Sant Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan" is the largest temple trust in the Vidharbha region.
The early life history of Gajanan Maharaj is obscure, his birthdate being unknown. Some speculate that he might have in fact hailed from Sajjanghad, which was the native place of Sant Samartha Ramdas. Das Ganu Maharaj has written a 21 chapter biography, "Shri Gajanan Vijay," of Gajanan Maharaj in Marathi.
Contemporaries of Gajanan Maharaj identified him by several names like Gin Gine Buwa, Ganpat Buwa and Awaliya Baba.
According to a legend, a money lender named Bankat Lal Agarwal first saw Gajanan Maharaj in a "superconscious state" on Feb 23, 1878 on a street. He performed many miracles in his lifetime such as giving a fresh lease on life to one Janrao Deshmukh, lighting the clay-pipe without fire, filling a dry well with water, curing leoprosy of a woman and many more. He attained Mahasamadhi on 8 September, 1910.

Namaskar (Greetings)
I am so pleased to receive your message.
So many women like Sister Nivedita (France) had surrendered to their respective Guru in the past and had become great enlightened woman saints. I understand your Earnest. It is your past good deeds that you are feeling to be liberated in this birth by realising self. You are absolutely correct that the invisible power called God is all pervading. Since it is all pervading it lies within all the living beings including us. This invisible power is our soul which we can't see, we can't imagine and even think about. The soul is always mistaken as individual. In fact the soul is encompassing all the universe and is invisible but homogeneous. It is due to our lack of knowledge of soul that we do not understand who we are. We identify ourselves with our respective perishable bodies, and forget about the immortal soul. Realising "Self or Atma or Self" is realising God. It must be learnt from Guru by prolonged association with Guru. It may take years together, because the knowledge of selfrealization is not to be learnt from text books like other sciences. This knowledge is beyond the five senses and is inducted in to disciple by enlightened Guru gradually, after confirming level of readiness of the disciple, time to time. It is necessary that one must surrender to Guru by giving him all he owns including his body and belongings. Of course, Guru renounces the world and worldly pleasures, and never requires any favour from disciples, but Guru always tests his disciples about disciples mind engaged in worldly pleasures and properties. Surrender to Guru is the inevitable first step towards surrender to God and understanding God.
In case you are in search of Guru, I shall be pleased to make you my disciple provided 1) you are trying to reduce your worldly desires 2) you have immense love for God and you are convinced that only Guru can show way to realise God 3) you surrender to Guru with Body, Mind and Money. (These three are the reason for the human ego, which are obstacles in the way of realising Self or God).
The form has been enclosed with this mail, which you can fill in and send to me if you prefer to become my disciple.
Good luck,
Swami Aniljee
