Dear Swamiji

Please enlighten me on 'SHARNAGATI'. I understand there are 6 or 7 steps to achieve SHARNAGATI. Could you enlighten me on what the scriptures have to say?

My Humble Thanks

Mohan Sachdeva

Thank you for asking very good question.

Sharanagati or "Surrender"

The meaning of "Surrender" to God or Guru is often mistaken by the people.as acceptance of slavery of Guru or some spiritual person. People want to learn the science of spirituality like they learn the laboratory sciences from their college professors. However, in all the three divine paths viz. devotional, yogic and eternal knowledge (Jnanyoga), surrender is must. A person who has to attain God, or attain salvation or self-realization, the Sharnagati (surrender) is inevitably necessary. One can't move an inch ahead on the path of spiritualism without surrendering to Guru. We find all most all the religious leaders and clerics in all the religions who are confused themselves about the knowledge of God. The reason is unwillingness of the people to sacrifice the human ego, which they
acquired gradually since their childhood with the knowledge of the world.

If one keeps anything earthly with him, he can't ride the vehicle of knowledge that takes to salvation. Why? Because worldly life and spiritual life are in two opposite direction, like east and west. You can't travel in both the directions simultaneously. In the same way you can live both worldly and spiritual life simultaneously. Worldly life is full of hardship and tensions with intervals of some happy events. Spiritual life is self-accepted extreme hardship for some time and then bliss for ever. One has to choose between two ways of life. However, it does not mean that a person who accepts spiritual life gives up all of his worldly duties, relations and enjoyments. He is different from others only due to acceptance of Saranagati or "Surrender". Life is different after surrender.

During Vedic days kind Janak wanted the knowledge of self-realization from hermit Ashtavakra. Hermit (Rishi) asked the king to surrender and give him all his worldly belongings including body and mind. Knowing the value of self-realization is higher than the mortal body and mind, king immediately agreed to proposal of hermit Ashtavakra. King was then ordered by hermit to promise that everything of king stands donated. King accepted the surrender and donated everything which he was thinking that he belonged it.
Hermit asked King to accompany him to forest. Both of them started their journey to forest. King remembered that he had to sign some Government orders. King Janak requested hermit Ashtavakra that he may be allowed some time to go back to kingdom to sign some orders which were immensely necessary for the benefit of the people. Hermit Ashtavakra was surprised. He said, " Whose kingdom, and who will sign who's orders? Oh King, do not forget that you have given me everything. Even your body and mind. You have only to think about me or about the subject matter which I have told you to think upon. Forget that you were a king sometime and you were in possession of something like kingdom" King Janak realised his mistake. He had no topic now to think over. This condition of his mind immediately gave him the peace of mind and he entered Samadhi with the blessings of Guru Ashtavakra.

King Janak was told by hermit to rule his kingdom again but only as an caretaker and not as a owner king. Janak remained king for many years, He was a self-realized king, always in bliss and peace.
So, we can learn from the above story that surrender is giving up the ownership and possessive thoughts over the worldly matters including body and mind by giving the right of ownership to Guru or God. The seeker must surrender three thoughts that always occupy his mind..
1. His thoughts that he is a owner of any worldly thing including body and mind.
2. His thoughts that he is a doer of any action in this world those are apparently carried out by his body and mind.
3. His thoughts that he is a enjoyer of anything in this world that gave him pleasure may be for sometime.
Giving up of these three thoughts is a surrender. Surrender to Guru is accepting Guru as God, who will impart the knowledge of Self i.e. knowledge of God and for that sake obey his orders and honor him like God of course after surrender of "three" kind of thoughts, say the ancient scripts and learned saints -hermits who attained self-realization which means who attained God while living on this surface.as JeevanMukta.
